Brett Versen
14-Select
Head Coach

Brett has a very accomplished playing career and experience coaching at many levels.  He graduated from The Ohio State University in 2008 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and having played on the Men’s Varsity Volleyball Team.  During his time at OSU, he played on three Conference Champion teams and advanced to the NCAA National Championships twice, while receiving All-Conference and All-America honors.  After graduating, he worked as an engineer for four years before returning to the court as a coach full time.  He got his start as an Assistant at the University of Kentucky and then moved on to James Madison University, also as an assistant.   Brett came to Louisville in 2014 as the Head Coach of North Oldham High School and MAVA 14-Select, as well as serving as Recruiting Coordinator for MAVA.  He is now the head coach at Sacred Heart Academy where he led the team to the State Title Championship for the 2016 HS season.

In addition to the experiences above, Brett has coached volleyball camps at the University of Kentucky, The Ohio State University, James Madison University, and for The Next Level Volleyball Camp, run by former Olympian Ryan Millar.  

 

Erica Wood

Erica played club volleyball (all positions) for various clubs throughout her  youth.
During Club Season, she was on the AAU National Championship team and Junior Olympic National runners up her 18's year.

Erica played locally in HS at Mercy Academy, receiving various district, region, and state honors. She then earned a volleyball scholarship and played at Lynn University, Division 2 Sunshine
State Conference 2003-2004. She received SSC All Freshman team 2003 as a setter/Libero.

Upon leaving Lynn University, Erica was a walk on at Western Kentucky University 2005-2006. Her team was Sun Belt
conference regular season and tourney champs, getting a NCAA bid 2005.

Last year, she was Assistant coach MAVA 14 Select with Brett Versen, and head coach Walden middle school 2017.

Laurel Meske

Laurel's background with volleyball is extensive. Starting at the age 16 playing for Northern Lights in Minnesota where she is from. From there she attended Creighton University playing for then from 2008-2011. Playing in the middle she had multiple all conference awards. Making school history in 2010, the team made the NCAA and made it past the first round. After graduating from Creighton she got into coaching at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. There she stepped into an assistant coach role. From there she moved back to Nebraska to be with her husband Dan, and stepped into an assistant coach at Nebraska Wesleyan. While coaching in Nebraska she also was coaching club for 12U. Then moving to South Dakota she then became the youth director and youth academy director at a club in Sioux Falls. There she master coached 14U and under age groups.

Six years ago, Bob's daughter, Chesney, started playing volleyball at Wilkerson Elementary School. That started the passion for him and this sport. In 2012 and 2013, he coached her in small "church leagues". In 2014. he started a small 2 team club in South Louisville called Louisville Fusion. They had 2 teams, 14's and 15's. He kept the club going in 2015 with 2 15U teams. In 2015, he was also named as the JV Coach at Noe Middle School. In 2016, things really started to accelerate for him in the sport as was named the JV Coach/Asst Varsity Coach at PRP High school as well as taking on his first team at MAVA, 14 Great White. In 2017, he took the position as Head Coach at MAVA of the 15U Blue Travel team as well as taking another promotion within the school ranks to PRP Varsity Head Coach. 

Bill Smith

Bill has been coaching volleyball for 17 years where he started at Whitefield Academy Middle School as an Assistant Coach from 2000-2003. From 2003-2007, Bill was the JV and Varsity Assistant Coach. Bill became head coach of Bethlehem HS from 2008-2012, with a record of 112-47, 2 district runner ups, 2 district championships, 3 regional runner ups, 1 class A State Semi Finals, 2 Class A Runner Ups. In 2013, Bill began at Oldham County, and is now the Assistant Coach at CAL where he began in 2014. Club experience includes Louisville Thunder from 2003-2007 and he has been with MAVA from 2008-present, winning several tournaments at various age groups, including 14s AAU Championship Runnerup.

From Louisville, KY.  Obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from UofL.  Currently a CPA for a local healthcare company.  Started developing an interest in volleyball when her daughter decided to play travel ball.  Daughter played travel volleyball for nine years as a DS/Libero– most of them at MAVA.  Have coached boys’ volleyball at St. Gabriel: K-4thgrade for five years, 5th-8th grade for three years and made it to City finals.  Coached girls’ volleyball at St. Gabriel:  K-4th grade finishing second one year and first the next.  Also coached girls’ volleyball for grades 5th-8th making it to the City finals four times and winning City last year.  Coached at Union with the ‘Crushers’ for two years.  Loves spreading enthusiasm for volleyball while teaching the fundamentals.

Clare Durbin is from Louisville, Kentucky. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 2015. Clare is currently a junior at the University of Louisville majoring in Accounting and Finance. She played travel volleyball from age 12 to 17 as a defensive specialist and right side hitter. This past year She was the head coach for Holy Trinity's 5/6th grade and 7/8th grade volleyball teams.

Nick started at the age of 19 coaching at Christian Academy of Indiana as the JV assistant coach. After CAI, he became the interim head coach at Meade County High School, setting new records. Continuing to coach after Meade county, he became the head coach of Henryville High School, winning conference, while being named “Coach of the Year” for conference. He is currently the Freshman head coach at Sacred Heart Academy. After coaching at Meade County, he began club as the head coach of 16-2 regional at Prodigy Volleyball in Southern Indiana, winning gold in multiple tournaments throughout the season. Following Prodigy, he pursued coaching at MAVA as the 15-3 Tiger head coach.
